Today's Reading From John 8.28-59

One Year Chronological New Testament Reading Plan

John 8.28-59, Commentaries, verse by verse

John 8.21-30
Jesus said that He was going away and the Jews could not find Him. Jesus spoke very plainly and explain what the spiritual situation was. He was from above, they were of this world. They would die them in their sins if they would not believe that he was the Christ. He had much in judgement against them. The fact was they were blinded and they did not understand the relationship between Him and the Father. What about us? Do we see things as they really are? Jesus is the Christ and He has the authority from the Father? He came and died for our sins that if we believe in Him we would have eternal life.

John 8.31-59
The Children of Abraham (v. 31-41): Jesus said (v. 31-32) 'If you hold to my teaching, you are really my disciples. Then you will know the truth and the truth will set you free.' We will know the truth IF we obey his commandments THEN the truth will set us free. This is on of the IF..THEN statements. We should not take verses out of context but look closely at small words such as IFs and THENs. He said, in essence, that if they were Abraham's children, they would do the things that Abraham did, they would not want to kill Him.
Jesus was pretty blunt with the Jewish leaders, He called them the children of the devil (v. 42-37) because if you belongs to God you hear what He says. But in this case they wanted to kill Jesus. The devil is the father of lies and a murderer and the Jewish leaders exhibited the characteristic of the devil.
Jesus made the amazing claim about Himself that 'before Abraham was born, I am!' (v. 49.
In his famous book Mere Christianity, Lewis makes this statement, "A man who was merely a man and said the sort of things Jesus said would not be a great moral teacher. He would either be a lunatic - on the level with a man who says he is a poached egg - or he would be the devil of hell. You must take your choice. Either this was, and is, the Son of God, or else a madman or something worse. You can shut Him up for a fool or you can fall at His feet and call Him Lord and God. But let us not come with any patronizing nonsense about His being a great human teacher. He has not left that open to us."

Hey Mike, I have read through the Chronological Bible for several years and now feel that I would like to spend more time this year in the NT - reading the NT twice and the OT once. Do you know of a chronological NT in one volume? I would appreciate your help.
